The cape is on every runway this fall, but it is not new. It has been the dressiest way to wear wool for a century, and it is the easiest coat to put on over a jacket.
We kept to the quiet ones: plain wool and cashmere, in colours that will not date them.

12 in stockWhat we looked for
- 01
Heavy cloth
A cape hangs from the shoulders, so it needs weight to fall well. Wool and cashmere do.
- 02
Arm openings
Slits or a half sleeve, so you can carry a bag without lifting the whole coat.
- 03
Over a jacket
It goes over tailoring without crushing it, which no sleeved coat can promise.
