Still Becoming

We could pretend to have arrived at every answer. It would be easy, and it would be a lie, and a house built on not performing should be the last one to perform certainty.

So the truth: we are still learning what our own words mean.

What "sustainable" really asks of us — we are learning. It is not one badge or one material; it is a hundred honest trade-offs, and the definition keeps moving as we look closer. We hold the direction firmly and the details loosely, and we would rather revise in the open than defend a line we've outgrown.

What "attained" really means — we are learning that too. Arrival is not a finish line a woman crosses once. It is something she keeps choosing. We are choosing it, as a house, in real time.

What it is to shop for oneself — for one's own eye, not the room's — is a harder practice than it sounds, for us as much as for anyone. We are still working out how to build a place that serves that instead of quietly undermining it.

Here is what does not move while everything else does: the voice. Calm, honest, unhurried, for her and not at her. When we are unsure of a choice, that is the thing we return to. What would this sound like if we were being honest? What would it sound like if we were being kind? What would she keep?

We follow that voice as we evolve, and we will change our minds in front of you when it tells us to. A house that is still becoming is not a weaker house. It is simply an honest one — and honesty, it turns out, is the part we were most sure of from the start.
